Therefore, it is important to raise awareness, educate and hold affected populations accountable regarding the implications for healthy and sustainable management of hygiene and health problems related to water or sanitation. In the first place, to all the populations that do not have satisfactory access to water and sanitation, without excluding, however, those that already have it. At first, programs like PHAST were created to help community groups (rural villages, small towns...) because it is easier to involve a limited number of people and members of the same group or community. However, larger-scale awareness and education campaigns can also be launched, as in the case of the State of Mali. participatory cartography : a group of locals draws up a map of the community. The way in which they do it and what seems important to them offer good starting points for discussion on crucial aspects of the life of the municipality; - missions of the locals : the team walks with a (small) group of locals through the municipality (or other relevant region) and comments on what is observed; - classification : people are asked to compare units (eg families/trees/crops) and group them according to their own criteria. For example, by comparing the importance of some trees between two, people discover the criteria they use to assess their usefulness. Ranking is also used to stratify the local population, eg, wealth ranking. The results of the classification and the criteria used offer starting points for discussions. - historical memory : the history of the families is evoked and the main events are used as reference points in the analysis of the current situation; - calendars : people indicate things that change over time, for example, the month in which they should borrow money or receive it, the times when their children have suffered from malaria or diarrhoea, when the rains are expected, etc
